Missing Numbers 1–20 Math Exploration

Counting to 20 out loud is not the same skill as knowing what comes after 13. Number sequencing is the bridge between rote counting and real number sense — and it is the single fastest early-math win for Pre-K and Kindergarten kids.

Why missing-number practice works

When a child fills a blank in a number line, they have to hold the sequence in working memory, compare neighbours, and then write the numeral. That is three skills in one 30-second task.

1. Number line hopscotch

Chalk 1–20 on the driveway and skip two or three numbers. Your child hops the line and shouts the missing ones. Physical movement locks the sequence in far better than a desk drill.

2. Clothespin number wall

Peg number cards 1–20 on a string, remove four, and hand your child the missing pegs. Great fine-motor bonus while they sort.

3. Fill-the-blank printables

This is where the worksheets earn their keep. Start with missing numbers 1–10 to build confidence, then move to 1–20 once your child is filling gaps without counting from 1 each time.

  • Keep sessions to 5–8 minutes
  • Let them use a finger to "walk" the line
  • Celebrate self-corrections, not just right answers

4. Backwards counting cards

Flip the routine: 20, 19, __, 17. Counting down is much harder and it exposes gaps that forwards counting hides.

5. Snack-tray counting

Twenty crackers in a row with a few gaps. Real objects turn an abstract number line into something they can touch — and eat.

A simple weekly plan

  1. Monday: hopscotch or clothespin line
  2. Tuesday: missing numbers 1–10 printable
  3. Wednesday: backwards counting cards
  4. Thursday: missing numbers 1–20 printable
  5. Friday: snack-tray review

Five short sessions beat one long one every time.
